Leveling Up

Hi there! My name is Michele and I’ve been an English teacher for over 25 years. Ever since I started teaching, I have already taught (very) young learners, children, teens, and adults. Also, I’ve taught all different levels at private schools as well as at English language schools. Last but not least, I’ve also been a teacher trainer and a freelance consultant. I guess I can say I’ve been around (an online school coordinator said that about me after I told him about my teaching experience while interviewing me and he was/is right).

However, I have been teaching private lessons since 2015 and I’ve been feeling kind of stuck. Don’t get me wrong… I simply love teaching!!! But I haven’t done much more than that ever since. What I mean is… it’s been a long while since I last took part in a TEFL conference, wrote articles, took any TEFL courses, and so on. Therefore, I felt it was high time I got unstuck and leveled up as 2022 was coming to an end. I guess we all tend to look ahead at this time – the end of a year and the beginning of a new one.

As I haven’t gone back to teaching yet, I have taken the opportunity to make some career resolutions and to commit to action. Here are some of the things I have decided so far…

These are my career resolutions for 2023

You might be asking yourself right now why I am willing to make mistakes. The author Neil Gailman wrote about his wish for 2012 and it resonates with me. This is what he wished for at that time.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.
So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

Hence, I just can’t wait to make lots of mistakes this year. What about you? What are your career resolutions for this year? Are you going back to school? Are you learning a new language? Are you changing jobs? Are you taking a graduate course? Are you getting a bachelor’s degree? Are you planning on working harder? Are you trying something new? What mistakes are you willing to make?

As for me, I hope you also make lots of mistakes and level up this year!
